You are standing in a piece of live Toronto history: Yonge-Dundas Square, opened in 2003 as the city's answer to Times Square, was officially renamed Sankofa Square on August 23, 2025. Sankofa is a Twi word from Ghana's Akan people meaning roughly "go back and get it", chosen after a years-long community process to move away from the Dundas name. Most locals still say Dundas Square, transit signs are catching up gradually, and the giant screens and free summer events carry on exactly as before. Either name gets you to the same 7:55 am pickup.
