Things to Do Near Ripley’s Aquarium Toronto (and When to Go)

The aquarium is the attraction my tour guests rate most consistently in downtown Toronto, and the one where timing changes the experience most. I have seen the Dangerous Lagoon walkway at 10:00 am on a March break Tuesday, which resembles a very wet subway platform, and I have seen it at 7:30 pm, nearly empty, sawfish drifting overhead in a quiet blue room. Same building, different planet. Here is how to do it right, and what to stack around it.

Timing the aquarium

Two windows work. Right at opening, before the school and camp groups arrive, gives you about an hour of breathing room in the galleries. Or flip the day entirely: the Sharks After Dark entry ticket gets you in after 5:00 pm, when the daytime crowds have drained out and the shark tunnel feels like it belongs to you. It has quietly become one of downtown’s better date nights, and it frees your daylight hours for everything else in this article.

Within a 10 minute walk

The CN Tower is literally next door; if you are doing both, tower first on a clear morning, aquarium after. Rogers Centre shares the plaza, and an evening Blue Jays game pairs naturally with a morning aquarium run. Roundhouse Park sits between them with the Toronto Railway Museum in the old locomotive roundhouse. Walk 10 minutes south and the Harbourfront boardwalk resets the pace of the whole day. The Niagara day, 3 minutes from the tanks

A lot of aquarium visitors are on a two or three day Toronto trip, and the falls are the obvious second day.
