Things to Do Near the CN Tower: A Local’s Guide

Our coaches load at 300 Front St W every morning, in front of the Starbucks with the CN Tower filling the sky behind us, so I have spent more mornings at the base of this tower than almost anywhere else in Toronto. Guests ask the same question while we wait: “we have a day around the tower, what else is actually here?” A lot, and most of it closer than people expect. Here is the honest local rundown.

At the tower itself

The CN Tower is 553 m of lookout, glass floor and, for the brave, the EdgeWalk lean-out around the outside of the main pod. Book timed tickets online before you come; the walk-up queue on a summer afternoon can eat an hour of your day. Clear mornings beat afternoons for visibility, and if you are having a meal at the revolving restaurant, the table effectively covers your observation visit, which changes the value math.

Five minutes from the base

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada sits directly beside the tower, and its moving walkway under the shark tunnel is the single most repeated photo my guests show me. It earns the hype. Rogers Centre is across the plaza; a Blue Jays home game turns the whole neighbourhood into a street party from about 5:00 pm. Roundhouse Park, the ring of green just south, holds the Toronto Railway Museum inside a real 1929 locomotive roundhouse, along with a brewery in the same building for the adults in the group. Ten minutes on foot puts you at the Harbourfront, where the lake breeze fixes whatever the crowds did to your mood.

Seeing the rest of the city from here

The tower district is the natural launch pad for the rest of Toronto, and two bookable options do the heavy lifting. The hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus loops the landmarks you would otherwise burn a day connecting on foot: Casa Loma, the Distillery District, Yorkville. And for the view the tower cannot give you, because you are standing on it, an 8 minute window-seat helicopter flight puts the tower, the islands and the skyline in one frame. The day trip hiding 2 minutes away

Here is the part most tower visitors do not know: the best day trip in Ontario leaves from practically the tower’s front door. Ninety minutes later you are at the falls with a licensed guide, 4 hours of free time, and stops at the Whirlpool and the Niagara Parkway on the way. A local’s one-day plan around the tower

If I had one day anchored at the CN Tower, it would run like this: aquarium at opening before the school groups land, tower observation late morning while the air is clearest, lunch in Roundhouse Park, the helicopter or the harbour in the afternoon, and a game or the Harbourfront boardwalk in the evening. If I had two days, day two is Niagara, no contest, and the coach leaving from 300 Front St W means the second day starts with a two minute walk instead of a rental car counter.
